Social Foundations

Social Foundations

Understanding Behaviour. Building Social Skills.

Social Foundations are supportive, behaviour-focused sessions designed to help dogs learn how to appropriately interact with other dogs while helping owners understand what is happening during those interactions.

Being social is about much more than allowing dogs to meet.

Dogs communicate constantly through their body language. They need opportunities to learn how to approach appropriately, greet, respond to another dog's communication, respect boundaries, manage excitement and move away when an interaction has finished.

Social Foundations provides a structured environment where you and your dog can develop those skills together.

What We Work On

Every session is shaped around the individual dogs attending, but we may work on:

  • Appropriate greetings and introductions

  • Canine body language and communication

  • Social manners

  • Respecting another dog's boundaries

  • Recognising when a dog needs space

  • Managing excitement and arousal

  • Disengaging from other dogs

  • Moving calmly away from interactions

  • Confidence around different dogs

  • Knowing when to allow, interrupt or end an interaction

The aim isn't to teach your dog that they should greet or play with every dog.

It's to give them the skills and confidence to navigate social situations appropriately while giving you the knowledge to recognise when they're comfortable, when they need support and when it's time to create space.

Learning to Read the Conversation

Dogs are constantly communicating with one another.

A change in posture, turning the head away, slowing down, becoming still, increasing distance or changing the way they move can tell us a great deal about how they're feeling.

Learning to recognise these signals helps you understand an interaction before communication needs to become louder through barking, growling, snapping or lunging.

During Social Foundations, we'll help you develop your understanding of your dog's body language as well as the communication of the dogs around them.

You'll learn when an interaction is going well, when your dog might need support and when it's appropriate to step in.

The goal is for both ends of the lead to become more confident in social situations.

Celebrating Every Win

Progress looks different for every dog.

For one dog, success might be a calm greeting.

For another, it might be choosing to move away, respecting another dog's request for space, disengaging from an exciting interaction or recovering more quickly afterwards.

No win is too small.

There is no pressure for your dog to interact and no expectation that every dog should progress at the same pace.

We work with the dog in front of us.

A Supportive Place to Learn

There is no expectation for your dog to be perfect.

Social Foundations is about learning — for dogs and humans.

If your dog becomes excited, gets something wrong or needs more space, that's information we can learn from rather than something to be embarrassed about.

You'll be surrounded by other owners who are also learning about their dogs and developing their confidence.

No judgement. No pressure. Just dogs and their humans learning together.

How Long Are the Sessions?

£12.50 per dog | Approximately 1.5 hours

Owners attend and are actively involved throughout.

Sessions focus on appropriate social interaction, canine body language, communication, confidence and practical social skills rather than obedience.

Social Foundations can provide a stepping stone for dogs who have become comfortable around other dogs and are ready to begin developing their social skills in a structured, supported environment.
